Event Recap: Human Trafficking Event

Last night in Westport there was an information night held at the Westport Free Methodist Church about Human Trafficking. Like many, I naively believed that human trafficking was a problem mainly centred around larger metropolitan areas. Boy was I wrong! It’s a problem that can affect small rural communities as well and the Leeds & Grenville Human Trafficking Coalition brought some really startling scenarios and information to the group of about 60 people who attended the event.

There are some startling facts to consider:

  • 91% of trafficked persons in Canada are from Canada
  • 98% of trafficked persons are women
  • An estimated 16,000 Canadians are being trafficked in Canada
  • 63% are between the ages of 15 and 24 years old

If you believe you’ve observed a situation where a person (or persons) is being trafficked, please listen to your instincts and contact someone that might be able to help. The more we work together as a community to be informed and to truly listen to each other, the greater the chance we have at slowing or even stopping these things from happening.
