Maple Weekend at Blair Bros Maples

Maple Weekend at Blair Bros Maples

The maple syrup was flowing at Blair Brothers Maples this afternoon for the kick off of Maple Weekend. Stacy, Scott and family had activities, demonstrations and treats on their homestead, inviting one and all to experience everything maple. Despite the snow disappearing last week, they had fresh maple taffy to roll and enjoy. Olive had informative (and cheeky) signposts laid on on their maple trail. Henry demonstrated his techniques for tapping a maple tree. Scott proudly showed off his system for boiling, filtering and bottling syrup. And of course, Stacy had all the baked treats. From maple butter buckets, to...

Westport Holiday Shop ‘N Hop: Day 2

Westport Holiday Shop ‘N Hop: Day 2

The Westport Holiday Shop ‘N Hop continued on Saturday with many more great events in the village. There was the judging of the Gingerbread House competition, a toy drive, the Westport Market Christmas Edition, the Westport Lions Club Santa Claus parade, lots of in-store shopping deals, live music, a Kitchen Party and creative workshops. We were very fortunate to have Mel Shaw send us some photos from the Gingerbread House judging and the Santa Claus parade. Enjoy those below. The Westport Lions Santa Claus Parade:

Christmas Begins in Westport

Christmas Begins in Westport

The Westport Holiday Shop ‘N Hop officially kicked off “Christmas Begins in Westport” last night. With businesses and residents lighting up their properties and shops, the holiday spirit was clearly in the air. There was an ugly sweater competition between the businesses, the Westport Arts Council Artisan Market, the Westport Library Holiday Market, carollers, the Tay Valley Choir, the tree lighting ceremony, “Selfies with Santa,” hot chocolate and other goodies around the campfire, and live music. A big thank you to local photographer Mel Shaw for capturing some of the events in the photos below. Events continue today with the...

Westporch Fest 2023

Westporch Fest 2023

It’s been one month since Westporch Fest 2023 came and went and I’m still awash in all the great memories from the day. The community, the musicians and all the volunteers made this PorchFest the best one yet! 16 porches spread out throughout the village provided the day’s entertainment on what turned out to be a wonderfully warm (and rain-free) September Saturday. Everywhere I turned, I was greeted with a smiling face. The spirit of why John Pringle and I started Westporch Fest was centred around getting out and celebrating life (and good music) with your neighbour, your friend, and...

End-of-Summer at Foley Mountain

End-of-Summer at Foley Mountain

We’ve had a hot spell in Westport this past week so it’s easy to believe the long summer days are here to stay. The truth is: the weather has become unpredictable in South Eastern Ontario and you never know what you are going to get one minute to the next. I’m happy to have been able to get back up to Foley Mountain for one more summer-y photoshoot before the leaves start to change. Enjoy the photos below, taken from Spy Rock and around my favourite place, the Beaver Pond.

MUSICwestport 2023

MUSICwestport 2023

Wow – you couldn’t get a much nicer day than that in the village! MUSICwestport took place this past Saturday: A stage at Lockwood Park and a stage at The Cove Inn brought multiple live acts over the course of about 7 hours. Bouncing around from stage to stage (and often playing courier in between the two locations), my feet sure were sore by the end of it all. You couldn’t wipe the smile from my face though and that’s usually worth a bit of physical pain or discomfort. To all the volunteers at the Westport Arts Council, thank you...

Summer Nights in the Village

Summer Nights in the Village

After the storm comes the calm, the peaceful and the tranquil. You would never know it was a rainy, chilly, gloomy day in the village from the gorgeous summer light that bathed our area this evening. If you were lucky enough to be out and about, you would have experienced it first hand. If you weren’t, lucky you have me, the tall guy with the camera 😎 Our village looks like this at the end of July in the evenings. Just come walk the village yourself, you won’t regret it.

Foodie Shop Adventures

Foodie Shop Adventures

This morning we had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Leeds Grenville Foodie Shop Adventure at our very own Rosie Yumski’s Fine Foods. A great group of attendees honoured the 12 unique shops around the Leeds Grenville area that make up some of the “Foodie Favourites.” These shops provide local and international foods, drinks, preserves and unique culinary items to help promote to regional food scene. Build your own Foodie Shop Adventure by visiting the Leeds Grenville website. Start by visiting Rosie Yumski’s in Westport Ontario. What will be your next Foodie Shop Adventure?

The Little Smoke

The Little Smoke

Views from Spy Rock at Foley Mountain and the Westport Harbour today. The smoke has enveloped our little village and despite there being a nice breeze, it’s hanging over us like a weighted blanket. When the sun is able to peek through the thick, dense smoke, it casts this eery orange glow everywhere. Stay safe everyone. Give a quick call to your loved ones – make sure they are ok. Continue to check on the air quality advisories and please, PLEASE do not have any open air fires or flames of any sort.

Chilifest 2023

Chilifest 2023

The Rideau Vista Chilifest, which happened at the Royal Canadian Legion Upper Rideau Branch 542 this past Saturday brought together various chili connoisseurs to help fundraise for the school’s end-of-year field trips. There were multiple chili recipes to sample, a silent auction, a people’s choice vote for the best chili, and just a wonderful reason to get out in Westport on a Saturday. Well done to all involved in the organization, preparation and “production” of all the yummy food. Here are a few photos we took while at the event:
